Happy Weekend!

Have a wonderful fall weekend.  Unless Frankenstorm shows up early, this weekend we are off to trick or treat in town and attend the annual Del Ray Halloween Parade- should be fun to see all the kiddos dressed up.

Hope you have a beautiful weekend! Go Tigers!

Danse Macabre- 80s style

We’re taking it back to the old school- literally. I was shown this filmstrip of Saint Saens’ Danse Macabre every Halloween throughout elementary school in Mrs. Tasos’ music class. And year after year, I was completely mesmerized by it. Imagery is such a gift for young minds.  It may be a bit simple for today’s young eyes but I still think its a great way to teach classical music. The image of that hooded violinist summoning the skeletons from their graves has always stuck with me and made me appreciate this piece from such a young age. Yet another reason why we cannot get rid of Big Bird- PBS rocks.

I have always loved Saint Saens’ work has and I think his music really speaks to young people. His Symphony No. 3A was used to score the movie Babe and (random tidbit alert) in Epcot’s French pavilion movie- a personal favorite in the World Showcase. I play Danse Macabre every year and have thought about the filmstrip since- I just found it, thank you Youtube!  Originally airing on PBS, it was shown in elementary schools throughout the 80s.  Anyone else have memories of this?

The Perfect Little Un-Hair Bow

I love accessories, but I’m not big on super girlie oversized bows.  I could be wrong, but I don’t think my little one is either.  I found these gorgeous little cashmere and felt flowered headbands made by Wee Stitchery out of Livingston, Montana- “upcycled vintage style for you and your little one”.  She uses a pretty color palette with corals, pinks, army green, greys, denim blue and other delicious hues.  You can mix and match and put your own color combinations together.  I just bought the four below for my mini.

Ok folks, here it is- a Photoshop and filter-free mom pic complete with computer cord in background and sans makeup.

Not exactly editorial, but real.

I just love the smiley-ness of it.

The Mom Stays in the Picture

Inspired by the recent Huffington Post essay by Allison Tate, I asked my 6 best girls from college to send me a photo of them with their kiddos.  Most of them had to search for one that they liked, because like most of us moms, there aren’t that many to choose from.  What a shame.  This group of lovelies are all wildly talented and ambitious women as well as devoted moms.  A surgeon, a designer, a photo editor, a real estate maven and stay at home moms, these women constantly inspire.  In short, they rock and deserve to be in the picture.  Mad props go out to my friend Natalia for rocking that one-piece.  Hot mamas!

Much in the same way I look back at photos of me in my 20s and think, “hey, I looked pretty good”, I know I will probably have the same feelings about myself 10 or 15 years from now.  No matter how much I think I need to get the pregnancy weight off or that I have a double chin, it is worth the time and effort to snap away for posterity.  Our kids will thank us for it.  Not only does my post-pregnancy body (or rather, mind) get in the way of my not being in more photos, but I am largely the photographer in the family.  Not that I am all that skilled, but I am usually the one being proactive about taking photos of the kiddos and as a result, I am not in them.

This needs to change.  Mothers of the world- let’s unite and join the effort so that The Mom Stays in the Picture!  Those of you fellow Robert Evans fans, will appreciate the reference.

Send me a photo of you with your littles and a brief description of yourself.  I’d love to include you in this series.
