Spring Has Sprung

Spring Has Sprung

Just a few images of what spring looks like in our neck of the woods. Easter was still sort of winter-y. We went from coats to short sleeves in a matter of days. Spring is here and I am so so happy about it. Fun times at the park. We visited the Tidal Basin today to see the glorious cherry blossoms. It’s a pretty happy time of year. Cin Cin! Springtime in the City

Really Spring

I am just loving these illustrations by Margaret Bloy Graham from Gene Zion’s 1956 book, Really Spring. These drawings make me swoon for springtime in NYC. We’ll be there come May- can’t get there soon enough. I love her drawings of the rooftop gardens and water towers. One of the first things I do when I get to the city is look up at those friendly water towers that dot the rooftops- the skyline from Houston and Lafayette is prime viewing- there are tons of them in all different shapes and sizes, each with their own personality. So pretty on[…]

Drinking Metaphysically

Disclaimer: I’m about to get real geeky up in this. What do you get when a former classics professor moves to California wine country, buys a vineyard full of 60 year old Sauvignon Blanc (that no one else would touch) and starts up an experimental wine project? A little bit of genius and a whole lot of who knows. But that’s kind of the point. Abe Schoener’s operation is titled The Scholium Project. Scholium is taken from the Greek word scholion meaning school- it’s an education in the process. I like it. Wine is a business and most vineyards are[…]

My Mixed Bag Mind on a Monday

My Mixed Bag Mind on a Monday-April

After a fantastic weekend at the ranch with my family and friends (post is in the works), my travel weary mind is a mixed bag of thoughts for this springy April Monday. Mad Men. Oh Joan, I’m so happy to see you. Season 6 started out with Don appropriately tight lipped for the first 5 minutes. Something (as always) is a-brewing in that head of his. For starters, he’s reading Dante’s Inferno on Waikiki Beach… it can’t be good. I thought it was a great episode that did not disappoint. Happy to see that Megan is still in the mix,[…]

Happy Weekend!

greetings from dc

Greetings from the land of the cherry blossoms. The blooms are about to burst into their little cotton candy puffs and dot the nations’s capital in a sea of pink. What could be better? All these pops of pink call for a pop of pink Champagne. I might have to bust out the Billecart-Salmon rosé in honor of the blossoms and my mom’s wedding reception this weekend. We are off to fête with the fam Texas style in a hoedown to celebrate my mom’s recent nuptials to her longtime sweetheart. Should be fun minus the plane rides with the bebes.[…]

Past & Present Personified

Past and Present

Amy Azzarito is a girl who knows how to mix it up. A former librarian, bookbinder, screenwriter, P.A., blogger and now managing editor of Design Sponge with degrees in library science, journalism and decorative arts, she’s a bit of a Renaissance woman. She can add author to the list as this past month she released Past & Present, an ode to 24 of her favorite moments in decorative arts history and the 24 DIY modern design projects inspired by them. Cool. She not only writes about decorative arts in modern design trends, but she lives it. I spied her apartment in[…]

Throwback Thursday

My Last Mix Tape

Depeche Mode’s on tour, Jurassic Park opens this Friday in a one week 3D release and I spied this cd at Starbucks where everyone on the cover looks like they just walked out of my freshman dorm. Visions of girls in oversized flannel shirts flood my brain while Liz Phair, the Indigo Girls and the rest of those Lilith Fair ladies harmonize in my head and that damn Counting Crows song never stops playing. Ahh yes, the early/mid 90s. And as for Jurassic Park’s re-release, do we really need it? Why yes, yes we do. This is one of those movies[…]

The Meme That’s Sweeping Japan

meme

This looks like a jump from Panorama, a Martha Graham piece I danced in, in college. Seriously. That jump plagued me. Are these Japanese kids really inspired by Anime or is Martha Graham their secret? This new jump craze spreading their nation is called HADOKEN-ing. Not sure the name will catch on here but don’t be surprised if you see people spontaneously busting out into this jump in your hometown sometime soon. The Japanese kids have a real way with trends. 7 Things for Spring

7 Things for Spring

A few indulgences for my favorite season: Anthropologie’s Poisson Paillette Peep-Toe flats. Because I know I will wear these every friggin’ day and I’m a sucker for anything metallic- the best neutral. Springtime in Paris- ooh la la. A darling little mini globe of Paris so a girl can spin while she dreams. Perfect for the bebes’ room. A cat-faced birdhouse- I love it. Smadar Shani’s silver basket bags. This Israeli designer has a way with brushed silver and leather. Trader Joe’s sells this Blason de Bourgogne rosé brut cremant for 12 bucks and it’s delicious. Fizzy, bright, rosy and like[…]

The Human Touch

HAN SOLO AND C3PO

Who would you rather see roll into your examination room? Duh. Ok, that’s not really a fair question as chances are you’re not going to get a doctor that looks anything like Harrison Ford, and to that point, you’re probably not going to get a robot that looks like C-3P0 either. But still- robot or human- who would you rather have as your physician? There has been a lot of fascinating robot tech talk lately and while it is probably true that we are headed toward a robotically inclined future, some argue that they will and can never replace the[…]
