Happy Weekend
Up for a 4 am feeding, I found myself watching Strange Bedfellows with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida. Not a great movie but perfect for my bleary-eyed viewing pleasure and I am always happy to see these two. This trailer just makes me happy- love the pigtails! Have a wonderful weekend. True Grit at Union Market
I recently headed out to Union Market DC where I found a charming assortment of food shops, farmers and a few local eateries. You can shimmy up to the bar at the Rappahannock Oyster Co. for shellfish and a cocktail created by J.P. Fetherston of The Columbia Room, grab a new dill pickle to rival Russ & Daughters at the Oh Pickles! counter, pick up a flaky and perfectly crusted DC Empanada to go, and sip a beautifully swirled latte from Peregrine Espresso, all in a few strides. While the market aims to lead the artisanal DC foodie brigade, what’s really interesting is the[…]
Happy Neewollah!
Neewollah- it’s not just that kooky festival from Picnic where Kim Novak is crowned the Queen of Neewollah. It’s the real live kooky festival in Independence, Kansas where the real live Queen of Neewollah is crowned each year. I just love this stuff. The festival was founded just as WWI was coming to an end after a particularly hooligan and shenanigan-filled Halloween where the tricks definitely outweighed the treats. Neewollah (Halloween spelled backwards) was the city’s answer to the vandalism and hoopla that Halloween typically promotes. It’s a good old-fashioned wholesome American festival that has evolved over the years into a weekend filled with[…]
Trick or Treat-Worthy Wines
Four dry wines to pair with your sweet treats. While sweet wines are usually paired with dessert- why not mix it up and try a dry treat pairing. 1. The 2008 Lini Labrusca Rosso, is a delicious little artisanal red sparkler. From Emilia-Romagna in Italy, this is not your mother’s Riunite- though it can be enjoyed on ice. Much like the California Chablis of the 70s, the Lambrusco has gotten a bad rap. This little diddy puts that notion to rest. Bright berries and a subtle earthiness with light tannins round out the wine, and its fizzy bubbles- the[…]

Unless Frankenstorm shows up early, this weekend we are off to trick or treat in town and attend the annual Del Ray Halloween Parade- should be fun to see all the kiddos dressed up. Danse Macabre- 80s style
We’re taking it back to the old school- literally. I was shown this filmstrip of Saint Saens’ Danse Macabre every Halloween throughout elementary school in Mrs. Tasos’ music class. And year after year, I was completely mesmerized by it. Imagery is such a gift for young minds. It may be a bit simple for today’s young eyes but I still think its a great way to teach classical music. The image of that hooded violinist summoning the skeletons from their graves has always stuck with me and made me appreciate this piece from such a young age. Yet another reason[…]
